The decision to redesign the double lobbies of World Wide Plaza on West 50th Street was a tough one. Some felt the existing design was dated while others thought it fine as is. The decision to remodel was made but planning would take time though the current condition of the all cherry-wood lobby was terrible. Restoration was considered a band aid. After FRW completed a full restoration of all surfaces, they are rethinking the need to spend a few hundred thousand in remodeling in favor of a maintenance contract for the lobby as is!
Schwab House: 11 Riverside Park
Schwab House has entrances on four sides of the building with lots of wood appointments throughout. The elevators, the reception desks and the mailroom are all beautiful mahogany panels with reveals to break them up. It was a referral from a prominent NYC architect who happens to live in the building. It's one thing when an architect refers you for someone else's space; You better be good. If he refers you for the lobby of his own residence, you better be fantastic....

The lobby of 12o Greenwich Street was used as a NYFD staging site post 9/11. There was enormous damage to all wood surfaces and it was thought that only completely rebuilding the space would bring it back to it's original chic. After stripping, sanding and filling all the damaged areas, the wood was washed in a white analine dye and finished in a clear water borne synthetic varnish. The column in the photo was wrapped in a heavy, densely pressed cardboard known as Sonotube. It was then covered in a pear wood veneer and finished top match the existing.
The Warwick Lobby
Hotels present a real problem for a wood finisher. When can space be accessed while the fewest guests are milling about. How doe staff service calls and registration while the finisher completes his work. Recently FRW was charged with the task at the Warwick Hotel on 54th and Avenue of the Americas. Said the manager, "I don't know how you did it but it's day and night from what it was! A minor miracle!"
